NAV to Business Central migration, and other ERP migrations

Moving from Dynamics NAV, Tally, an older on-premises ERP or spreadsheet-based processes to Business Central? We compare the realistic routes, recommend one and deliver it in stages.

The challenge

A migration is two projects in one: moving data and moving the way people work. Old customizations, years of inconsistent master data and undocumented integrations all surface at once. The cheapest-looking route is often not the cheapest by the time data quality and customizations are counted.

Technology we use

  • Dynamics NAV and Business Central
  • AL extensions
  • Configuration packages
  • Excel and CSV staging
  • Cloud migration tooling

How we approach it

The same four steps apply whether the project is a rollout, an integration or a fix. Only the depth changes.

  1. Technical upgrade

Suited to NAV systems on supported upgrade paths with modest customization. Data and history carry over, while C/AL customization must be rebuilt as AL extensions.

  2. Fresh implementation with data migration

Best when customization is heavy, data is messy or processes have changed. You start clean with selected master data, opening balances and open documents.

  3. Cloud migration

For existing on-premises Business Central moving to SaaS using Microsoft's cloud migration tooling, planned around extensions and integrations.

  4. Staged cutover

Whichever route is chosen, we rehearse migration runs, reconcile balances and cut over in a controlled window.

What is included

  • Assessment of current system, customizations and data quality
  • Route comparison: upgrade, fresh start or cloud migration
  • Rebuild of needed C/AL customizations as AL extensions
  • Master data cleansing and mapping
  • Opening balance and open-document migration
  • Historical data strategy: full history, summarized or archived
  • Migration rehearsals and reconciliation reports
  • Cutover planning and post-go-live support

What you get from it

  • A route chosen on evidence, not habit
  • Customizations reviewed before being rebuilt
  • Balances reconciled before users log in
  • A modern platform that receives regular updates

Frequently asked questions

Can NAV be upgraded to Business Central?

Yes. Microsoft defines supported upgrade paths from several NAV versions. C/AL customizations cannot be carried over directly and must be re-implemented as AL extensions. In many cases, migrating data into a fresh Business Central setup is cleaner than a technical upgrade.

Should we upgrade or re-implement?

It depends on how much customization you have, the quality of your data and whether processes are changing. We compare both options with effort and risk before you commit.

What happens to our historical data?

Options include migrating full history, migrating summarized history plus opening balances, or archiving old data for read-only reporting. The right choice depends on audit and reporting needs.

Can you migrate from Tally or other ERPs?

Yes. We map master data and balances from the source system, load them through repeatable migrations and reconcile them against the source.
